One of the most frequently asked questions about lab-created diamonds is how they differ from natural diamonds? Both are primarily made of carbon. Both have the same properties, that means the same hardness and sparkle that makes diamond one of the most sought after and coveted gemstones in the world. But the short answer is time. Lab-created diamonds can be grown in a matter of weeks or days depending upon the method used. Natural diamonds take billions of years to form in the earth’s crust.
Feelings run high, and tempers flare, on the topic. It’s not uncommon for a post on Instagram to get reams of comments as people weigh in on where they stand in the face of the changing diamond industry. The truth is, as the dust settles it is becoming clearer that both mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds have a place in the market. It boils down to personal conviction and, of course, price. Lab-grown diamonds are a fraction of the price of natural diamonds but as hardwearing with the same brilliant light return.
That being said a couple recently celebrated a special milestone and had us create a spectacular full eternity ring with blue sapphire and natural diamonds. Lab-grown gems were a footnote in the conversation.
